Rainy Day Riding

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Thursdays we meet in Yorktown in the lower half of the parking garage at 5 PM.  This Thursday was threatening rain but it held off for most of the ride. Yorktown and the surrounding battlefields make for a low traffic ride on most days but this Thursday there was almost no traffic at all — an added bonus!  Mike was a little off today so we only went 26 miles and averaged about 15 mph. Rod and Dale still sprinted at all the hills, though.

During the after ride debriefing, the Riverwalk’s bar ran out of Legend Ale, which is a near disaster but the Starr Hill Amber was an able substitute, so all turned out well.

Tour de Chesapeake Rest Stop With spring comes the Tour de Chespeake

This year’s Tour de Chesapeake bicycle ride in Mathews will be on Saturday, May 16th.   The Mathews Rotary Club, which includes many of our riders, will be providing a rest stop for the ride as well as holding our annual Sausage and Beer Fest in “downtown” Mathews, just a couple hundred yards from the start and finish of the Tour de Chesapeake ride.  Stop by and celebrate the end of the ride from 1 to 5 PM on Saturday.

Bicycling around Mobjack Bay…

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Gloucester and Mathews Counties in Virginia border the Mobjack Bay.  These counties are part of the Middle Peninsula area.  The land is very flat in Mathews, mostly flat in Gloucester and Middlesex.  What we lack in hills we sometimes make up in wind, though.  We have an informal bicycling group which meets on Sundays at 2 PM at Liberty Square ( the new Mathews County Courthouse ) and on Thursdays during daylight savings time in Yorktown, VA at the “downtown” parking garage.  For details on these rides see our companion web site, mathewsfreewheelers.org.
